Dr Kang-Teng Lim

MBBS, FRACP

CARDIOLOGIST & CARDIAC ELECTROPHYSIOLOGIST

Special Interest: Management of cardiac arrhythmias and device therapy for heart failure and prevention of sudden cardiac death

Dr Kang-Teng Lim joined the Gold Coast Heart Centre in June 2008 as a consultant cardiologist and electrophysiologist.

Dr Lim graduated from Melbourne University in 1997. He continued in Melbourne, completing his basic and advanced cardiology training, and was admitted as a fellow of the RACP in 2004. Dr Lim completed his fellowship training in electrophysiology and pacing at the Royal Perth Hospital in 2006. He undertook further training in Bordeaux, France, under the supervision of prominent electrophysiologist Professor Michel Haïssaguerre, who pioneered catheter ablation therapy and atrial fibrillation ablation. Dr Lim has been involved in numerous peer-reviewed publications and several book chapters during his time in Bordeaux.

Dr Lim’s main interests consist of catheter ablation therapy for atrial fibrillation and other cardiac arrhythmias as well as the implantation of cardiac electronic devices (pacemakers, defibrillators and loop recorders). He has extensive experience in general cardiology and also performs coronary angiography, transoesophageal echocardiograms and other non-invasive cardiac investigations.

He is a member of the Gold Coast Heart Centre cardiac education team and is actively involved with the provision of education to medical students from both Bond University and Griffith University.

Dr Lim provides inpatient and outpatient consultation services weekly at our Southport (Gold Coast Private), Benowa (Pindara Private) and Tugun (John Flynn Private) rooms.  Weekend and Holiday cover is provided by other members of the Gold Coast Heart Centre, providing a 24 hour / 365 day per year service.

CONSULTANT CARDIOLOGIST & CARDIAC ELECTROPHYSIOLOGIST

Dr Wai Kah Choo is a Consultant Cardiologist and Cardiac Electrophysiologist.

Dr Choo specialises in managing patients with heart rhythm abnormalities presenting in a variety of ways including palpitations and loss of consciousness. Dr Choo performs all types of electrophysiological procedures from supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) ablations to complex arrhythmia such as atrial fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia. Dr Choo also proficiently implants and follow-up on devices including internal loop recorders, pacemaker, defibrillators (ICD) and biventricular devices (Cardiac Resynchronisation Therapy; CRTs).

Dr Choo completed his medical education at University of London, United Kingdom on a full government scholarship. Within this time, he also worked with Professor Valentin Fuster at Mount Sinai Hospital, New York City, USA. He underwent postgraduate medical training in London including training at St Mary’s Hospital, Hammersmith Hospital, Royal Free Hospital and Addenbrookes Hospital (Cambridge). He moved to Scotland where he received general cardiology training as well as a two-year fellowship in Cardiac Electrophysiology in Aberdeen. This was followed by a cardiac electrophysiology fellowship at Australia’s quaternary electrophysiology centre, the Royal Melbourne Hospital, under the mentorship of internationally renowned Professor Jonathan Kalman. Dr Choo established the only electrophysiology service in the Northern Territory in 2017 and led as the Director of Arrhythmia Services.

Dr Choo holds the Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Cardiology in the United Kingdom. Dr Choo also holds the prestigious Certified Electrophysiology Specialist (CEPS) and Certified Cardiac Devices Specialist (CCDS) qualifications awarded by the International Board of Heart Rhythm Examiners (IBHRE, USA). Dr Choo serves as an IBHRE Ambassador and serves in several IBHRE committees. He is a Fellow of the Heart Rhythm Society (FHRS, USA), Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC, USA) and Fellow of Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand (FCSANZ) and Fellow of Royal College of Physicians (London). Dr Choo sits in the CSANZ committee for Atrial Fibrillation.

Dr Choo is a Senior Lecturer at Flinders University, Australia. He is dedicated to education of patients and doctors on management of heart rhythm disorders and holds a Postgraduate degree in Medical Education as well as Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (UK). Dr Choo is widely published and participates in national and international research trials. He regularly presents at international conferences. His area of research is in supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) and atrial fibrillation.

Dr Choo provides inpatient and outpatient consultation services weekly at our Southport (Gold Coast Private) and Tugun (John Flynn Private) rooms, together with outpatient consultation services at Hope Island. Dr Choo performs Electrophysiology Procedures and device implants at Gold Coast Private and John Flynn Private Hospitals.  Weekend and Holiday cover is provided by other members of the Gold Coast Heart Centre, providing a 24 hour / 365 day per year service.
